Luke Johnston, a British blogger who goes by the online name "Dr. Luke," visited Chang An Hospital in Xi"an, Shaanxi Province, to experience the healthcare system firsthand as an ordinary patient. The experience left him with much to reflect on.

Luke noted that many countries, including the United Kingdom, provide free healthcare services. While this may sound appealing, he argued that insufficient healthcare capacity, resources and funding can result in excessively long waiting times. In his view, these delays cost patients more than just time; they can also come at the expense of their health and even their lives.

Luke believes China has found an effective way to address this problem. He pointed to China"s relatively well-established medical insurance system and affordable insurance premiums, which he said help significantly reduce patients" healthcare costs. He also praised Chinese hospitals for their efforts to reduce waiting times and provide patients with timely treatment, describing this as an area in which they perform particularly well.
